Advice for a 27yr old looking to get into Software Development.

Hey Guys,

I'm looking for some advice here, I currently work in the home automation/smart home industry as an installer and make roughly 50K/ year in California. I've been thinking about being able to buy a house in California and with the super high housing prices, I feel I won't be able to make it on 50k/year. I've been considering taking online courses @ WGU while working full time because they allow you to work at your own pace, the goal is to get a Bachelors in Software Development in the hopes of making 80k+/ year. Now although I'm very tech and mechanically savvy. I know 0 about software developing and wondering if starting at 27 is too late. I know some guys who have been coding/developing since 16-17. Is it a realistic goal to start learning now while working full time to eventually get a degree for a better career? I'm very hard working and I know if I started classes I would see it through. Any advice for a young guy who just wants a great job so he can buy a home?

Edit: Also my current Job provides tuition assistance for up to $3,500 per year for undergrad programs.
