Headphone Jack won't work?

My headphone Jack won't recognize my headphones. I'll put my headphones in, and it'll work for about six seconds before my video or music will pause and when I press the play button it will start to play through the speaker despite the headphones being plugged in. I apologize if this isn't the correct sub but I would still really appreciate some help.
