I found a packet sniffer installed on my company computer today.

I've been an IT Support Specialist for a good 20+ years, and can troubleshoot and fix Windows and Mac computers equally well. I've been working help desk jobs for a good 10 of those 20+ years, and that's how I developed the dual platform skills. Manager's generally appreciate this dynamic skill set I bring, and they pay me pretty well for it too. I just wanted to give you all a little of my background. I'm also a woman, and I just want point that out, because some IT jobs I've had, I've been the only one. This job is no different. I'm totally not bashing men or anyone. Just want you to know my perspective. I am nice to everyone, love to crack jokes, love it when we blast metal, and generally get along with most everyone.

I sat down at my computer this morning and went to log in, like I always do, but I couldn't this morning. It's a Windows 10, and I got the pop-up that said a local admin was already logged in, and I'd have to ask permission to log in. I thought, this is interesting, so I clicked yea, let me log in, and within 20 seconds, I was logged in. Ok, a little weird, but I have nothing to hide except employee information that has my employee ID and social security number on it. I shop Amazon and other sites, read the news, look up recipes, and that's about it. I still work hard and I have the most resolved work orders every month.

I was intrigued and had some slow time, so I dug a little deeper. I found that 2 other help desk co-workers had recently logged into my computer. One was a couple weeks ago, and the other was a few days ago. We have 2 types of user ID's in our IT shop, one is a general domain login, and as IT folk, we also have domain god and goddess login ID's. The one that logged in a few days ago was someone's domain god ID. I'm getting more curious now, so I decide to check to see what's installed on my computer, and low and behold, there is WinPcap. This is a program that collects network traffic, which can then be read by someone. I know what we install and don't, and this program isn't one. It's not on any other Windows computers, because I spent some time checking today. I do the builds and I've never ever seen it installed or had to install it.

It bothers me that this bothers me, if that makes sense. I totally understand this computer doesn't belong to me, and knowing this, I don't do stupid shit at work. I took some steps to discourage these 2 from logging in again and have changed a bunch of passwords, and uninstalled WinPcap. I guess I just feel like it's hard enough trying to make friends with the men I work with, because I have to be friendly, not flirty, smart, but not too smart. The past 5 years or so, as I get older, I'm tired of trying not to look smart, because they're uncomfortable. I know my shit, but I'm just kinda bummed that someone is trying to get something on me, or at least that's how it feels. I haven't told anyone, because I want to try and nip this in the bud by myself. Am I making too big of a deal out of this?
