Best way to transfer multiple gigs of image date over an SCP protocol?

What is the best compression format to send multiple gigs over a bandwidth-limited connection using only an SCP connection? This isn't some weird IT course question. I have limited tools at work.

I was considering tar-balling it and sending that over, or, alternatively, writing it into arrays and storing it in parquet format which I could then write back out to the image data.

Suggestions would be great.
